Garlett to play in amateurs
Hawthorn draftee Dayle Garlett will cap one of football's most remarkable falls from grace in the coming weeks after applying for a transfer to play for Swan View in the fifth division of the WA Amateur Football League.
Garlett decided to play country football after walking out on the premiers in March, but struggled with the travel demands while playing for Wheatbelt side Dandaragan.
If the transfer is approved, he could line up for Swan View alongside his cousins Michael Garlett and Shannon Stack in the WAAFL's C3 division on Saturday.
"He just wants to get away from the grind," Swan View president Tony Cuccaro said.
"He just wants to get back into football somewhere local where he doesn't have to travel as far into the country … he wants to be with his mates. We're just going to try and help him out, point him in the right direction, and hopefully he can get back on track and away he goes."
Garlett walked out on Hawthorn less than four months after being recruited with their second-round pick in the national draft, citing homesickness and an inability to deal with the demands of the elite environment.
The 20-year-old kicked 25 goals in five games for Dandaragan, including a bag of 10.
