Jazz aficionado plays SW libraries

Libraries at Australind and Harvey have a special treat in store this month with a performance and book talk by well-known jazz pianist, composer and author, Michael Nelson.

Among a string of achievements to his name, Mr Nelson has accompanied famous musicians such as James Morrison, Shirley Bassey, Don Burrows and Ritchie Cole.

The jazz lecturer at the WA Academy of Performing Arts and UWA has also made a name as a composer.

In 2003, he left his position as lecturer in jazz studies in Canberra to finish his book _The Craft of Jazz Piano _and devote more time to composition.

His album _Silent Thoughts - the lyrics of Shannon Nelson _features 20 of Perth's finest jazz musicians and singers.

The two library sessions promise an interesting evening for audiences, with Nelson to combine a concert with a book talk on his latest literary work _Muso _.

Mr Nelson said he was looking forward to his trip south and talking to people.

"I've been in love with jazz ever since I heard Art Tatum at the age of four years," he said.

"My dad was a piano player and would play records after his gigs and I would listen, although I was supposed to be asleep. Jazz provides me with all the joy and satisfaction I need from a lifetime's activities - playing, writing, orchestrating, travelling and teaching."

Mr Nelson said his wife, singer Jenny Wrenn, would join the trip south to perform with him at the library presentations.

Nelson will be at Australind on Monday, June 15, and Harvey on Thursday, July 16.

Both sessions - at 5.45pm for a 6pm start - are free and followed by light supper but bookings are essential.

Phone the libraries at Australind on 9797 1430 or Harvey on 9729 1080 to reserve a place.
