Bunbury farewells 'cheeky little monkey'

A Bunbury boy killed in a tragic accident during a car rally in the South West has been remembered as a “cheeky little monkey” at his funeral this afternoon.

Regan Burton, 6, was fondly remembered by his parents Kylie and Vance and siblings Braeden, 10, and Caitlyn, 8, during an hour-long ceremony in Bunbury that was attended by about 200 people.

Regan was killed when a car crashed through a spectator barrier during a rally event at Donnelly River on May 9.

After the funeral, dozens of red, blue and white balloons were released into the air.

The colours were symbolic - red was Regan’s favourite colour, blue reflected his love of the West Coast Eagles and white symbolised his next journey.

Family friend and AFL umpire Dean Margetts said the Burton family was well respected in the South West.

“It was a combination between a lot of sadness and a lot of laughter,” Mr Margetts said after the funeral.

“Today was a real celebration of the six years Regan packed into his energetic lifestyle.”

Police are investigating how a race car failed to take a bend on the Donnelly River track and skidded into spectators.

Regan died instantly and his siblings were injured in the crash.
