Registrations are now open for the second South West Mudfest obstacle race on July 4.

The winter mud race attracted 897 competitors last year, who ran, jumped and crawled through 5km and 12km obstacle courses at Bootleg Brewery.

This year's course will feature eight new obstacles and the muddiest conditions yet seen in WA, according to event organiser Rex Dubois.

"It has a distinct down-south flavour," he said.

"Tractor tyres, hay bales, obstacles that require you to crawl through mud and netting."

Mr Dubois said the "worst-possible conditions" were chosen for the event and he expected about 2000 people to attend. He said many of the obstacles had been upgraded and changes had been made to the course for 2015.

"We've got a lot of nice, thick mud," he said.

However, Mr Dubois said the race would not be "as extreme" as other popular races such as Tough Mudder. He said the event was designed so everyone could take part, with awards for best costumes on the day as well as race winners.

Mr Dubois said most mud races took place in Perth's northern suburbs, while the South West missed out on winter events.

He said each contestant would receive a free burger and beer or soft drink upon finishing the race.

Entry to the 5km short race costs $77, while the 12km event will be $99. Enter at www.swmudfest.com.au .
