Slammers take two from two

The Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers women’s side have snapped a four game losing streak in emphatic style, taking down the Cockburn Cougars by 23 points on Sunday afternoon at the Eaton Recreation Centre.

In a four-quarter clinical performance, the Slammers showed efficiency and skill to run rampant on the depleted Cougars, who were missing player-coach Deanna Smith for much of the game with an apparent illness.

The Slammers were led by Deanna McCormick (24 points and seven assists) and co-captain Kate Fielding, who from the tip-off showed intensity and speed across the court.

Long range queen Kelly Bastow was also on target, hitting four three pointers from the same amount of shots in a 16 point performance.

Meanwhile in the men's game, a Tre Nichols inspired Collie Crane Hire South West Slammers survived a second-half scare to hold of the Cockburn Cougars by 12 points at the Eaton Recreation Centre on Sunday night.

Nichols hit a game high 48 points, as the Slammers began the game with ferocity and skill, but could not keep the momentum for the full four quarters to win 112 to 100.

The Slammers led by as much as 30 points in the third quarter, but the Cougars shot themselves back in the game thanks to captain Gavin Field (33 points and 11 rebounds).

For the Slammers fellow import Brian Volkel hit another triple-double (24 rebounds, 10 assists and 17 points) while player-coach Ty Harrelson shot well from beyond the arc to finish with 22 points.
