Capel bowls up a Classic

It was Capel's day on the bowling green when the Harvey Bowling Club held the Harvey Classic last week.

The annual inter-club competition, a major event in the bowling season, attracted 20 teams from as far away as Geraldton to Busselton and Narembeen in the Wheatbelt.

Harvey Bowling Club captain Oscar Dunn congratulates Capel players Mick Erridge, Terry Scott, Werner Schmidt and Ron Bickers on winning the Harvey Classic.

Each team played six games of four in ideal weather conditions but Capel bowlers proved to be too strong for the field of contenders, taking victory with 12 points plus 55 without dropping one game.

The composite team of Binningup members Graeme Reading and Kim Ward and Boyanup bowlers Merv Shemeld and Frank Rose finished in runner-up position with 10 points plus 34. Bunbury placed third with 10 points plus 20, followed by Collie with 8 points plus 30.

Harvey club captain Oscar Dunn said the event had been run for more than 30 years and was popular with bowlers from other clubs.
