Miami baker plans highway pies

Drive-through Miami Bakehouse pies could become reality if a proposal is approved by Harvey Shire Council tomorrow night.

The bakery plans to expand to a site next to the existing Gull Myalup Roadhouse and first applied for planning consent in late 2013.

The proposal was withdrawn from the council’s agenda at the owner’s request but revised plans were approved last week by the council’s Development Services Committee despite an officer’s recommendation to refuse it.

Plans for the site include 35 parking bays, an eating house where owners anticipate about 80 per cent of customers will consume food on-site and a drive-through.

Harvey Shire Council president Tania Jackson said the committee acknowledged the proposal was an improvement on the past plan with better landscaping and a more permanent building.

“There are still issues that will be considered at the meeting though,” she said.

Concerns were raised in the committee’s agenda about whether it would be too close to the road and whether it should be considered an eating house or fast food outlet, as the latter is not permitted on land zoned general farming.

The roadhouse owner also lodged a submission objecting to the proposal and said Miami Bakehouse’s service would be “exactly the same as I already have here in the same spot”.

In the agenda, it was noted that issues raised last year had been addressed.

“The proposal is now considered to be a significant departure from the original design and should council wish to approve, it is recommended that re-advertising prior to determining is undertaken,” the agenda said.

Miami Bakehouse operates three stores, including a roadside outlet on Forrest Highway near Pinjarra.
