New men's group builds confidence

Busselton Men's Space members Dan Thomas, Pete White and Jay Grant and Lamp Inc support worker Rod Taylor.

A new service to help men with mental health issues is opening in Busselton.

Men's Space, at 226 Bussell Highway, offers therapy by getting guys hands-on with tools.

The service is funded by the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing, and delivered by Lamp Inc's Day to Day Living Program.

Recovery support worker Rod Taylor, who runs the workshop, said the service was an excellent form of therapy for male members of Lamp. "With blokes, it's hard to maintain their interest, but when they get their hands on tools, it's much more grounding," he said.

"Just doing the hands-on stuff is therapeutic in itself.

"It's building their self-esteem. A lot of these young blokes have been knocked down so many times. This gives them a sense of achievement."

About eight men are signed up and the group is looking to meet on Thursday mornings.

If enough participants join through Lamp, guest speakers will be brought in to speak about mental health issues.

Mr Taylor said the group was on the lookout for donations of tools and timber.

"We're looking for donations of old tools. We don't have a lot to start with … we've had a couple of lathes donated to us," he said.

"We could do with some timber to build a couple of workbenches and that sort of thing."
