Thoughtful conference inspires attendees

The first TEDxBunbury was described as a success as an intimated 100 people were given a taste of some inspiring, controversial and illuminating ideas.

Held on Saturday, the same day as TEDxPerth, seven speakers from a wide range of backgrounds, were given the chance to discuss their thought-provoking ideas.

The highlights included 15-year-old Bryce Lanigan explaining his determined efforts to build a wheeled sport facility in the South West.

Bryce, who is a Big Picture Education student, has spent three years developing the idea and has approached Dardanup Shire Council about turning it into a reality.

Bunbury engineer Joeri Tuijn offered up his intellectual property in a bid to accelerate production of a miniature power plant that can be installed in residential homes.

He called on the audience to help develop the project which had the potential to lessen the country’s reliance on fossil fuels for home energy.

South West MLC Sally Talbot offered her summation of Australian politics, describing it as being in real trouble.

The other speakers included Bunbury artist Andrew Frazer, disability advocate Heather Simmons, university lecturer Dr David Rhodes and early childhood teacher Fiona Farren.

TEDxBunbury licensee Susie Delaporte said feedback was positive and they would look to hold the event again.

"I am hoping that the conversation will keep happening and it will result in great things happening for Bunbury," she said.
