Logue Brook dam sites ready by Christmas

Work on a new camping ground at Logue Brook Dam is well under way and up to 60 camp sites could be ready for the influx of holidaymakers as early as Christmas with another 50 sites available at the middle of 2015.

The $2.4 million facility is part of the Parks for People initiative funded through the State Government’s Royalties for Region program and will include 3 km of internal roads, nine toilet blocks, some with universal access, and five picnic shelters with gas barbecues.

The scenic location in the State forest under the management of the Department of Parks and Wildlife is popular with people fishing for trout or perch, canoeing or waterskiing.

The department’s project manager for capital works Glenn Willmott said demand for camping grounds during peak season was high and the new sites catered for increasing numbers of holidaymakers.

“Logue Brook Dam is probably better known for waterskiing, however, I believe this new campground project will add value and offer different experiences such as bushwalking and mountain bike riding through the beautiful jarrah forest, ” he said.

“It will have a pump track, a continuous loop of smooth dirt mounds, where children can have a go at mountain bike riding with their parents.

“The location was chosen as it provides camping sites in a natural forest setting with views over the water and to discourage unsustainable camping activities such as rubbish disposal and human waste management on the northern side of the dam.

“The department has received numerous complaints from members of the public regarding toilet paper and broken glass, and so forth, on the dam bank.”

Mr Willmott said planning began in 2012 and works started in July last year and would be completed by the end of June by the department and contractors from the area.

Stairs from the camp sites to the dam and the boat ramp will also be upgraded.

Mr Willmott said the new camp ground would be managed by the Lake Brockman Tourist Park and complements the existing facilities.
