Students share their vision

The annual showcase of South West high school student artwork, Iluka Visions, is set to open tonight with an awards ceremony at the Bunbury Regional Art Galleries.

The exhibition, consisting of a range of art forms including ceramics and mixed-media, is intended to represent the ideas South West students have about the world they are inheriting from their parents and decision-makers before them.

Year 12 Bunbury Catholic College student Aimee Dodds won the top prize at last year’s exhibition, a prestigious one-week internship with the Perth Institute of Contemporary Art.

Her winning artwork was inspired by a vivid memory of an emotion she experienced as a child.

“It was a dry point etching that I did in Year 10 about a little teddy bear I used to have, ” she said.

“I remember that I didn’t want him to be hung on the clothes line because the pegs would make him cry — obviously I made it up but that memory was so strong.”

She said the opportunity had given her an insight into the world of an art professional in Western Australia.

“The best thing I got to see was the different way people used materials. I learnt that nothing is exempt from use.”

Aimee channelled the learning experience into this year’s entry, using a mix of wax, bitumen and gold leaf in a piece about duality — heaven and hell, good and evil.

The Iluka Visions exhibition will be open to the public from August 30 to October 5.
