Surf and art are coming together at Yallingup Ngilgi Cave Gallery this month.

Yallingup artist Adam Stanley is presenting the Local Seascapes exhibition, featuring his striking and colourful sea-based work.

Stanley uses acrylic paints to create pieces on canvas, surfboards, wine barrels and even corrugated iron.

“I think art should be something different to anything else, ” he said.

“When you paint on different surfaces … people will walk past and have a look at it and go, ‘Wow’.”

Stanley said his works on wood and iron were perfect for decorating alfresco areas, which was a growing aspect of the art market.

He also likes to incorporate the different shapes of the surfaces into his pieces.

“I use the concave and convex to make it more three-dimensional, ” he said.

“Also in the last three months I’ve been carving into surfboards to get a 3D barrel effect.

“I’ve even got a green light inside the board coming out.”

Stanley said he painted better after surfing, where he could see from close range exactly how the light hit the water.

As for the local seascapes, he said there was no better inspiration.

“The focus is local beaches, local waves and the colours of the sunsets here, which is different to anywhere in the world, ” he said.

The exhibition runs to May 4.
