Kirkpatrick scrambles to State heat wins

South Western Times, Thursday, July 8, 1976

Bunbury rider Shane Kirkpatrick had an outstanding day during the third round of the State scramble championships at Shrubland Park on Sunday.

Kirkpatrick came first in both heats of the 250cc championships and also won the 15-lap Bunbury Scramble.

The State championship heats are 20 laps and are a gruelling test of both man and machine.

Even to finish one of these races is something of a victory.

Another Bunbury rider, Wayne Grimes, scored a second in one of the State heats.

Other successful Bunbury riders were Michael Dowson, who was third in the first heat of the 14-16 years; Garry McDermott, who was second in heat one of C grade; and Wayne Patterson, who was twice third in heats of A and B grades combined.

Members of Bunbury Motorcycle Club, who ran the championships round, were surprised on Sunday to find the track in perfect condition after heavy rain on Saturday night.

Riders came from all over the State to compete and many camped overnight at the circuit, creating a carnival atmosphere with their tents and caravans.

Only riders with open competition licences could compete.
