A trailer of festive cheer goes north
A Cooloongup family is taking the Christmas cheer up north this year, driving a trailer full of goodies to the remote Pilbara town of Nullagine.
On Boxing Day the Chatterton family will load up a trailer with food hampers and toys and travel 1430km north to share the Christmas joy with Aboriginal families in the town.
Working as a financial adviser at Rockingham Salvation Army, Liza Chatterton said her family’s spontaneous decision to take the trip was made when they heard of the dire need for help.
“We heard there is a need up there for people to help support some of the indigenous communities, so we decided that we would see what we could rustle up,” she said.
“Other Salvation Army officers were saying how expensive it was up there and how it was very hard for them to try and get out of debt due to the price hike of their electricity, their rent and their food. By the time they pay for their rent and electricity there is no money left for anything else.”
Mrs Chatterton said they had gathered food supplies and up to 300 toys for the trip with the help of Salvation Army District Headquarters in Northbridge.
She said the trip was made possible by Rocko Hire who will supply the trailer free of charge, Lift Rite for supplying the vehicle and the support from the Salvation Army.
