New name mooted for Bunbury beach

Renaming Bunbury’s Back Beach is being considered as part of a tourism plan which aims to make the most of the area’s close proximity to the city centre and ocean outlooks.

Public submissions have suggested potential new names such as Bunbury Beach, Forrest Foreshore Ocean Beach, Bunbury Sunset Beach, Indiana Promenade, Sea Scape or Water’s Edge.

The Back Beach tourism precinct plan is expected to go before Bunbury City Council next week for approval.

Community consultation with stakeholders has prompted mostly positive reactions to the plan and suggestions for possible new names for the area.

Other suggestions included Bunbury Sunset Strip, Back Beach Promenade, Back Beach Esplanade, Bayview, Ocean Park, Ocean Side and Esplanade Views.

Plans for the area, stretching along Ocean Drive from the Lighthouse Beach Resort to Fawlty Towers, include a mix of accommodation such as motels and hotels, public open space and residential use.

The plans will guide the development of the area — gearing it towards tourism-based activities — which the council hopes will create an asset for the Bunbury community and economy.
