Umpires develop skills

Netball WA A-badged umpire Justin Barnes with Port Hedland Netball Assocation umpires Karen Ballantyne and Katie Evans.

Regional umpire development officer and A-badged umpire Tara Beattie travelled from Karratha earlier this month to lead the North West Netball Associations' umpire development day.

Association spokeswoman Katie Evans said the day was attended by almost 30 people, including many juniors.

"The group refreshed their umpire skills and achieved the level 1 theory course," she said.

"We reviewed the basic rules and had discussions around contact and carrying the ball, as well as practised identifying (the) three feet (rule when defending) - some missed the mark by a few centimetres."

The participants had a chance to put their theory skills to the test when the North West representative teams trained for their upcoming North West Championships in Broome later that day.

The association hopes to badge umpires for the upcoming championships with national netball umpire Justin Barnes mentoring the squad umpires last week.

Barnes enjoyed his visit and thought there was great potential with the umpires and was impressed with the senior squad umpires.
