Javelin star earns medal

Imogen Kelsch claimed a bronze medal in javelin at the Australian Junior Athletics Championships in Sydney.

Broome teenager Imogen Kelsch has proven herself as one of Australia's best young javelin athletes after picking up a bronze medal in a national junior athletics competition.

The Kimberley youngster is a Year 11 student at Perth College and travelled to Sydney for the Australian Junior Athletics Championships earlier this month to represent the school and WA.

Despite being only 16, Imogen finished in third place in the under-18 grading, with a personal best throw of 40.52m.

The result follows on from the Broome teenager winning gold in the equivalent event at the WA State Athletics Championships in February with a throw of 38.65m - nine metres longer than her closest rival.

Imogen has also represented WA at under-15 level in the past, travelling to Kuala Lumpur for an international competition.

Imogen represents Perth College in volleyball and netball, and is a member of the University of Western Australia Little Athletics Club.

With the school holidays coming up next month, Imogen is set to return to the Kimberley and will be acting as a mentor for local athletes in the Broome Senior High School Specialist Athletics Academy.
