Focus on diversity

Staff and students at Karatha Senior High School celebrate Harmony Day.

Schools and community groups across the Pilbara joined hundreds around the nation celebrating the 15th annual Harmony Day last week.

Harmony Day is celebrated on March 21 every year to recognise Australia's cultural diversity and encourage a sense of belonging for all Australians.

Karratha Senior High School used the occasion to promote the Harmony Day message alongside its anti-bullying campaign Bullying. No Way!

School chaplain Chloe Zietsman said it was important to promote cultural diversity, inclusiveness and a sense of belonging for all students.

"It's all about trying to get everyone to be more accepting, more open, and understanding other people's backgrounds, cultures and beliefs," she said.

"Bullying has been a big thing here in the past, so we invited the Youth Shed to play some music and create an atmosphere of inclusivity.

"We've also got the Aboriginal and indigenous islander officers helping kids to make some loom band friendship bracelets for each other and have had students signing the Act Belong Commit pledge."

"We finished the day with a teachers v staff tug of war session, which was certainly a great way to finish off what has been a fantastic day for all."

Locals also gathered in Onslow at the Kids Kitchen Garden to celebrate the community's cultural diversity, with food from around the globe and multicultural games for people to enjoy.

The garden showcased a range of gourmet delights, while the V Swans team hosted games and activities originating from various cultures.

Shire president Cr Kerry White was pleased with the community's celebration of Harmony Day, especially in the wake of tropical cyclone Olwyn.

"Harmony Day promotes a message of cultural acceptance, reminding us to treat everyone with respect and acceptance," she said.

"After what has been a long week for many, seeing Onslow residents come together with a great sense of multicultural pride highlights the true strength of our community spirit."
