Cup glory for Walsh

Rourke Walsh won Lake Kununurra Golf Club's Summer Cup by four points on the final day of competition.

Lake Kununurra Golf Club's Summer Cup was decided at the weekend, with Rourke Walsh snatching an unlikely victory from Craig Jolly on the final day.

Jolly, who had led the standings for most of the season, looked likely to take the title but two great rounds by Walsh catapulted him from third place to the lead.

Playing off a handicap of 18, _Echo _ journalist Walsh first shot a one under par 35, which yielded a huge 46 points, and followed it up with a five over par 41, which scored 40, to move from 235 points overall to 247.

Jolly, who was unable to better one of his six best scores, remained in second place on 243 points, while third-placed Dan Hayman leapfrogged Matt Stubbs and Scott Day with a 39-point final round.

Stubbs and Day shared fourth with 236 points, ahead of Nathan Siebert (235), Duane Burns and Mark Fensom (231) and Alan Wordley (229).

The Summer Cup is a handicapped Stableford competition that has been running since November.

The competition involved players submitting a card every Saturday for either nine or 12 holes, with their best six cards until this weekend determining the winner.

Players could play their round any time on Saturday before 5.30pm and could submit as many cards as they liked until Saturday afternoon.

The final round also permitted players to submit two cards for the day.

Summer Cup captain Brad Adams said the competition had been successful, with more than 70 players taking part during the season.

"It has been a great competition this year for the club, bringing new members and a good turnout for the presentations," he said.

"The Summer Cup will run again after our normal season, which starts up in a couple of weeks."

The top-10 placegetters from Summer Cup took home a range of golfing equipment, sponsored by Shoal Air and Bradleigh Trading, including a new set of clubs and several bags.

Before the regular season starts, the LKGC will first hold its annual open day on April 12.

The four-person Ambrose competition has teams play six holes each as a social warm-up event to introduce the new season.
