Science rooms the right formula for high school

Four months after its science classrooms were destroyed by fire, Newman Senior High School has received two state-of-the-art demountable science classrooms.

Head science and maths teacher Mariam Ghosn said the two classrooms had been fitted with $20,000 fume hoods which would allow students to conduct more experiments.

"The fume hoods are like cupboards with two clear doors on either side, so you can do experiments, and it removes the toxic fumes," she said.

"The rooms are amazing, each has great air-conditioning and we've got access to Bunsen burners.

"They've also got plumbing and gas hooked up and they both have storage and a preparation room."

The new classrooms were due to be completed in March but Ms Ghosn said builders had worked hard to have them ready for students to use by the second week of the first term.

"Every student from years 7 to 10 will use the science rooms plus our senior science classes," she said.

The science block joins two other demountables installed at the back of the school and a new student services office.

Earlier this month principal Milanna Heberle said plans were under way to replace the demolished wing.

"We have had initial meetings with an architect who has put together a concept design that's in the early stages," she said.
