North West Roller Derby is calling for new players as it prepares for its 2015 season, which starts next month.

NWRD club president Vanessa Brown said the sport welcomed women of all shapes and sizes.

"(It) challenges us physically and mentally - it is fun and a great way of making friends," she said.

A social skate night will be held on February 13 and two recruitment nights are scheduled for February 16 and 20 at the JD Hardie Youth Centre.

Women of all skill levels are welcome, but NWRD media officer Denise McLaren said players must be over 18.

"We have both full-contact and also non-contact roles available, and also non-skating positions, so there is something for everyone," she said.

"Ultimately, we would love to get enough members together and trained up to have at least two full teams or more based in Hedland."

She said most players adopted a persona and derby name when they were on the track.

"Some people get really carried away with their whole alter ego and almost turn into a different person on the track," Ms McLaren said.
