Volleyball plans for Hedland

A small group of sporting enthusiasts are laying the groundwork for the first social beach volleyball competition in Port Hedland.

With help from the community and some sponsorship it is hoped a small quadrangle at the back of Cooke Point Recreation Club will be transformed into a sand-lined social haven.

Town of Port Hedland club development officer Lucas Wimmer wants to put the word out so people who are interested in helping with the development of the beach volleyball court, or who play the sport socially, can get in touch.

Mr Wimmer said he hoped individuals or teams who were keen to get involved in a fun, active competition would come forward.

Port Hedland resident Michael Jacobs, who has played social volleyball all over Australia, said people of all levels of expertise would be welcome.

"It's such a social sport, I know its going to be really popular," he said. "It would be perfect for companies too who want to field a team - it's the sort of activity that's great for team building."

The organising committee, comprising Mr Jacobs, Mr Wimmer, and Rec Club president Paul Aylward and manager Andrew Cappa, said they hoped to get the competition off the ground in less than three months.

The first hurdle to overcome is getting the space ready for action, which will involve clearing what was once the second bowls rink.

There will be a fundraiser for the beach volleyball project at the Cooke Point Recreation Club on March 15 at 7pm.

The evening will be beach volleyball-themed and feature a barbecue, DJ and will cost $10.

All proceeds will go to the development of the Port Hedland Beach Volleyball Club.

Those interested in getting involved can contact Lucas Wimmer on 9158 9689 or cpdo@porthedland.wa.gov .au.
