Captains to steer the Karratha ship

Karratha Senior High school captains Vicki Duff and Kevin Tat are looking forward to a busy year.

The school will be going through some big changes this year, with the junior and senior campuses combining at the Dampier Highway site, but both captains said they were up to the challenge.

Kevin said when they brought the campuses back together in July he wanted everyone to feel a sense of belonging.

“Then we can have events more often in a large area where we can actually organise things without having a split campus,” he said.

Vicki said she was looking forward to having the campuses together as one.

“That way we can have full school meetings and have them more regularly without having to go all the way down to the lower school,” she said.

Both students said they wanted to be school captain after years of looking up to their leaders.

“I really always admired those who led others and the way they could lead and ideas they came up with and how they helped other people to do things,” Kevin said.

“I wanted to be like them.”

Kevin said he just wanted to make sure everyone was having fun during their school years “’cause you only get one shot”.

Vicki hopes to be a person students can come to with ideas or for advice.

“I was student councillor in Year 11 and I saw what (last years’ captains) Danielle (Upton) and Daniel (Baguley) were doing and I wanted to get involved with that and help the school out and bring my ideas up,” she said.

Principal Greg Kelly said both Vicki and Kevin had been groomed for their new roles during their time as school councillors last year.

“I don’t worry about these guys,” he said.

“The leadership they have already shown speaks volumes.”
