Inclusion WA raises awareness
Inclusion WA last week announced the Woodside-operated North West Shelf Project as a partner for the Karratha Inclusive School Holiday Program.
The inclusive sports program has been held every school holidays since July 2011, offering Karratha residents an opportunity to engage in a range of sports.
It aims to educate the community about the importance of inclusion of people of all abilities.
Going from strength to strength, last week’s program saw record numbers come and join in the fun with various sports held including basketball, swimming and T-ball.
The partnership between the North West Shelf Project and Inclusion WA will focus on developing the sustainability of the holiday sports program.
With the development of a local steering committee, Inclusion WA is hoping to hand over the management of the holiday program at the end of this year.
Inclusion WA sport and community development manager Denver D’Cruz said it was an important step for the program.
“The Inclusive Holiday Program has already bought many benefits to Karratha, and this partnership will ensure we are able to capacity build the local clubs to a point where we can step back from the program and it will continue to run,” he said.
“Sport has the power to bring people together.
“The universal popularity of sport, its physical, social and economic development benefits, make it an ideal tool for reducing the stigma associated with disability or perceived differences in society.”
With part of the grant money, Inclusion WA donated money to the Karratha and Dampier Teeball Association to help with the purchase of new gloves.
