For 28 years, David Meyer has dedicated his sporting skills, time and business knowledge to Katanning Country Club, and in return was honoured as a life member last week.

Mr Meyer joined the club in 1987 with his wife Charmaine as newlyweds and found the club was a chance to participate against some competitive talent, as well as meet new and young people.

Since then, Meyer has been heavily involved in various projects within the club, was president of the tennis club, captain of the golf club, and twice chairman of the country club.

“The club has evolved into a significant aspect for the community and the region,” he said.

“It has been very fortunate to have a lot of talented sportspeople throughout golf, tennis and squash come through.

“Sport is a good outlet for participation and social interaction, and when kids come along it is great family-based support.”

Chairman Mike Hobley said the club respected David for his contribution.

“It came from the members — they suggested we made David a life member and it’s a no-brainer, really,” he said.

From re-surfacing the tennis courts, extensions and financial budget planning, the club has undergone extensive renovations to transform it into the facility it is today, Mr Meyer said.

One of Mr Meyer’s proudest achievements was overseeing the re-surfacing of the fairways.

“That million-dollar project took eight years alone and that has been by far the most rewarding,” he said.

“It’s a fantastic result for the club and it’s as good as what you usually only see in the city.

“But it has never just been myself — I have always been a part of a very capable team … that have been fantastic.”
