Foodie friends to do battle

Come to Mt Barker for an old-fashioned country fair, complete with games, local produce and wine, and cook-off with two celebrity chefs.

The inaugural Taste of Plantagenet Fair will be hosted by Plantagenet Wines, featuring stalls, live music, old-fashioned games, oysters and wine.

Direct sales and marketing manager Leah Clearwater said the new event would take the spot of the cancelled Albany Oyster Festival and aims to celebrate Plantagenet’s 41 years as the first commercial winery in the Great Southern.

“It’s to showcase our wine but also Great Southern produce,” she said.

Celebrity chefs Anna Gare and Don Hancey will host a cooking demonstration using local ingredients such as Mt Barker chicken and Albany oysters, and compete in a mystery box competition at 3pm.

Gare said she was looking forward to her cook-off against Hancey at the fair as it would be revenge for her after watching the children tackle the same situation on Junior MasterChef.

“We’re going to be having a cook-off with a mystery box, which is pretty exciting trying to get myself back with all those mystery boxes we gave those poor little children on Junior MasterChef,” she said.

Attendees can purchase a gourmet barbecue lunch plate and glass of Omrah wine for $20. Face painting, arts and crafts and a stall from the Porongurup Country Women’s Association will also feature.
