Trails lead to top Albany spots

iTrails Down Under creator Perri Pires has launched her Anzac Hero trail which features Albany Anzac Peace Park.

An Albany woman's traditional birthday treasure hunt has inspired a new venture she hopes will be a boost for Albany's tourism market.

Perri Pires has spent the past 18 months developing iTrails Down Under, which involves participants solving cryptic and picture clues and using GPS co-ordinates to locate and learn about landmarks.

Mrs Pires created her first trail for the Albany Heritage Festival as part of her tourism studies, which was popular with visitors looking for a family-friendly, informative way to visit the checkpoints.

"I realised this is exactly what I want to do - combine my love of photography, travel, geocaching and cryptics to create theme-based trails for people to use the outdoors as a classroom," she said.

She has created six trails and her latest is an Anzac Hero trail, which will be launched tomorrow at the Albany Public Library, in conversation with Albany author Jon Doust.

She said the Anzac Hero trail has been well received by Albany RSL sub-branch president Peter Aspinall, the City of Albany and local historians, and she has had interest from Merredin, Margaret River and Denmark to create trails for the towns.

Mrs Pires will lead a mini-treasure trail from 5.30pm.
