CWA beach flats to be renovated

Three seaside flats owned by the Country Women’s Association Albany will be renovated after the accommodation was forced to close in February last year.

The units at Middleton Beach were built in 1938, supported and run by CWA Albany members, to provide an inexpensive holiday for families.

Albany CWA member and Albany Seaside Flats committee member Gail Peter said although there were four newer flats, the “viability” of the project was threatened when the three closed as they needed repairs to meet safety standards.

Ms Peter said hundreds of members voted at a State conference in York last month to spend $120,000 renovating the flats.

Albany CWA president Peg Vickers said she was pleased with the decision.

“It’s a big thing for us to keep the flats going — there are not many similar left in WA,” she said.

Renovations will include work to ceilings, painting and refurbishing.

These days the units are used mainly by CWA members, but also by families, quilting, photography and walking groups and university students.
