Teen to rub Nobel shoulders

Former NASHS student Stuart Neil will attend the World Science Conference in Israel.

An Albany teenager is one of seven Australians offered the rare opportunity to mingle among Nobel Laureates at the World Science Conference in Israel this year.

Stuart Neil, who graduated from North Albany Senior High School last year, will travel to Jerusalem for the extensive five-day program, one among 300 students from across the globe.

The 17-year-old applied to attend the conference with the help of his former NASHS teachers and said he felt lucky to have had such support from his school.

“They had an approach to education which made you feel like you actually wanted to learn,” he said.

Stuart said he was most looking forward to hearing lectures from Nobel Laureates including Robert J. Aumann, who won the Nobel Prize for economic science in 2005 and Arieh Warshal, the 2013 chemistry Nobel Prize recipient.

“Meeting those people is going to be mind-blowing,” he said.

NASHS principal Sharon Doohan said she was proud to see a former student of a small school awarded such an opportunity. “I think it shows his determination and commitment to do well and from the school’s perspective, our ability to support him, work alongside his parents and encourage him to aspire and do well,” she said.

“We’re just so proud of him and for his family, because he’s had such an amazingly supportive family and it’s been wonderful to have them as part of the school community.”

The conference will be held from August 17 to 21 at Hebrew University’s Edmond J. Safra campus.
