ASHS’ Shenaye Gibbs is held up by Denmark’s Bec Goodliffe.

Albany Senior High School held on to beat Denmark High School in overtime to claim the A-division boys title at the Great Southern High Schools Basketball Tournament at Albany Leisure and Aquatics Centre on Tuesday, October 22.

In the 10th running of the annual tournament, 24 teams competed over six divisions.

ASHS were the big winners for the day, taking out the A-division boys, A-division girls, B-division boys as well as the C-division boys.

They missed out on five division wins as their C-division girls fell to Denmark High School 16 to 15 in the grand final.

ASHS coach Nikki Byrne said the school selected students to coach individual teams with great success.

“Dylan Smallwood was really strong on the boards and Jaylen Beattie was good throughout the day for the A-division boys,” she said.

“Tayla Orzel impressed with her leadership in the A-division girls while Shenae Gibbs improved during the day.”

Denmark High School won the remaining two grades, triumphing in the B-division girls and the C-division girls.

Lindsay Stirling from Denmark High said there were very close games in finals and a high-standard of skill and teamwork from all sides

Mt Barker Community College, North Albany Senior High School, Katanning SHS and St Joseph’s College also competed.
