Figures revealing more than half of Goldfields men do not get enough physical activity have sparked a free fitness program introducing local men to a higher level of exercise.

Pledge to Parkrun is a free six-week program for Goldfields men who need extra motivation and support to achieve or maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Recent data has revealed 32 per cent of men in the region are obese and 60 per cent are not physically active enough.

With heart disease and diabetes also the major causes of male deaths in the region, local men are being encouraged to make the pledge when the program begins during Men's Health Week on June 15.

The program will include two training sessions a week facilitated by the Goldfields Oasis, and advice from personal trainers and dieticians, with the ultimate goal to complete the 5km Kalgoorlie-Boulder parkrun on August 1.

Local parkrunner Paul Barrett has been labelled the "face of parkrun" after going from a slow walk around the track in Karlkurla Park, to gradually being able to jog, and then run the 5km course.

Mr Barrett said he wasn't surprised by the amount of inactive men in the region and agreed something needed to be done.

"Over the years I have been different sizes and fitness levels, and I have now got to the point where … I would like to be around for as long as I can, and that means keeping a healthy lifestyle," he said.

"Parkrun is a great form of exercise for all men, from someone who the furthest you walk is the pub or around the shop, to those that perhaps do go to the gym and train.

"It has a snowball affect on the rest of your life, you go from doing the walks on Saturdays, to going to the park a few days a week, maybe you'll start looking at how much you're eating or drinking as well, it all helps."

Goldfields Population health dietician Rachael Nugent said a wide range of heath and fitness professionals would be available to help men achieve their potential throughout the program.

"Whether you are starting out for the first time, or looking to build on the physical activity you are already doing, Pledge to parkrun is the perfect program for mates to get together and challenge themselves and improve their health at the same time," she said.

"It could very well lead to a lifestyle change that saves your life."
