Average of one truck driver a week tests positive for drugs

A truck driver on the Eyre Highway has allegedly tested positive for methamphetamine and been found with 4g of cannabis during a routine stop by Eucla Police.

The 40-year-old-man was stopped at the quarantine post on the WA/SA border as part of a routine drug test just after 10.30am yesterday.

The man is the 22nd driver this year nabbed by the border town's police after an alleged positive drug test.

Eucla Police Sergeant Ian Morris said although the majority of drivers were doing the right thing, the fact an average of one driver a week was testing positive for illicit substances was concerning.

"If they make any positive reading, they become a danger to themselves, their company, the loads they are conveying and the public in general," he said.

Sgt Morris warned anyone thinking of getting behind the wheel after taking drugs that Eucla police would work tirelessly to ensure the roads were safe.

"You won't have anywhere to run, you won't have anywhere to hide, we will be out there and we will apprehend you if you take illicit substances and drive," he said.
