Mental health barbecue

Mental Health Week got off to a sizzling start on Saturday when Ostara Australia held a barbecue to get a positive message out to the Goldfields community.

Staff from Ostara Australia’s Kalgoorlie-Boulder branch held the free barbecue in St Barbara’s Square to raise awareness about mental health issues. Kalgoorlie-Boulder branch team leader Stephanie Allnutt said the purpose of the event was to show locals the opportunities on offer.

“We had a lot of people come down on the day to have a chat about both mental health and the job opportunities available to them,” Ms Allnutt said. “We bought about 200 sausages for the free sausage sizzle and we got rid of about 150 in the three hours we were in St Barbara’s Square.

“It’s an excellent return, because not only did those people walk away with a sausage, but also with vital information about mental health, and since that day we’ve had a number of people follow up with us, which is great to see.”

Ms Allnutt said Ostara helped people with mental health issues and disabilities in the Goldfields-Esperance region to find suitable employment. The Ostara Kalgoorlie-Boulder branch can be contacted on 9021 5055.
