Special day to celebrate yearlings

The Kalgoorlie Miner would like to wish all thoroughbred horses in the region a very happy birthday as they officially become one year older today.

All thoroughbred horses share the same birthday. In the northern hemisphere it is January 1, but here in the southern hemisphere, it is always celebrated on August 1.

A horse born before today is officially now called a yearling – even if it is only one day old.

The concept for the shared birthday is to standardise the age of horses for comparison due to a lack of historical birth records in the past.

Local jockey Misty Bazeley said the date of the horse’s birthday was not well known throughout Australia.
