Proposed relocation of the Spalding Horse and Pony Club has been formally incorporated into a Sunset Beach Precinct Plan despite a petition in opposition signed by 182 people.

The City of Greater Geraldton council last night gave final approval to the precinct plan, emphasising it must include a "negotiable" relocation which would leave the club no worse off either financially or in terms of facilities.

The precinct plan would incorporate the pony club site in a commercial and activity centre.

Club president Leonie Marsh said after the meeting the decision was disappointing but she hoped it might be a few years before the relocation would happen because the site was Crown land and would have to be rezoned.

City chief executive Ken Diehm confirmed this was the case, adding the relocation issue had been extensively addressed three times, in the 2029 and Beyond, Sporting Futures, and Sunset Beach Precinct Plan public consultations.

"It is our desire to work closely with the club to find a suitable location and until it has found a site and the present site is ready for development, which may take three to five years, we are happy for the club to stay there," he said.
