Positivity for Ord expansion

Plans to expand the Ord Irrigation Scheme into the Northern Territory are well underway after the Northern Territory Government announced it had a dedicated team working on the project.

Chief Minister Terry Mills made the announcement at the Ord Stage 2 channel opening near Kununurra last week.

“Firstly we have a dedicated team that has now been resourced to work from our side of the border on the Ord project,” Mr Mills said.

“That commences now and we will work with our colleagues on this side of the border at all levels.”

Mr Mills, originally from WA’s Wheatbelt, said he carried his own dreams of developing the Ord and his Government would work closely with the Miriuwung Gajerrong traditional owners of the NT land.

Mr Mills, Premier Colin Barnett and Minister for Regional Australia Simon Crean signed a memorandum of understanding to work towards the cross-border expansion at last Friday’s Ord Stage 2 opening.
