Chefs and farmers unite

Modern chefs are often written up as a mixture of rock star and kitchen alchemist, whether they're knocking out finely executed plates or the latest on-trend fad. We forget a key player in this story. The farmer - rarely held in the same esteem. Katrina Lane set about enabling a connection last year with the Summer Long Table and will repeat it on February 1. A celebration of local producers and "eight thoughtful chefs", Lane pairs producers from the Balingup region with top Perth chefs for a night that celebrates the produce from one of our most fertile regions.

Perhaps uncomfortable shining the spotlight on herself, conversation with Lane is firmly on the producers and the chefs assembled. Last year's event fed up to 150 guests at the Balingup town hall. "Without sounding cheesy, there was a lot of love in the room. For the first time some of the producers told us they felt validated by their peers and chefs using their produce," Lane says. Tickets are $160 a person (includes local beverages matching each course). For reservation inquiries phone 97641344.
