Newcastle midfielder diagnosed with cancer

Newcastle United midfielder Jonas Gutierrez has said he is undergoing chemotherapy after being diagnosed with testicular cancer.

The 31-year-old said he had his left testicle removed after the discovery of a tumour.

Gutierrez told Argentinian TV channel TyC Sports that he had paid for the medical costs himself.

“I came here and I assumed the costs despite having a contract with Newcastle,” he said.

“Money is not important. What is important is health. I had to start chemotherapy.”
