Hemsworth film pulled from Oz cinemas

Australians counting down to see Thor star Chris Hemsworth's latest flick Blackhat are being dealt a hammer-like blow.

The tech thriller, which stars the Aussie actor as a dreamy hacker, is no longer getting a cinema release in this country.

The flick is instead going straight to DVD - meaning it's still getting a home entertainment release, although a date hasn't been locked down yet.

It follows news of Blackhat's dismal takings at the US box office on its opening weekend.

Directed by Collateral's *Michael Mann *, Blackhat debuting with just $US4.4 million ($4.76 million) - a disappointing result, particularly considering it reportedly cost $US70 million to make.

Blackhat stars Hemsworth as a convicted hacker who must help a Chinese and American taskforce track down a cyberterrorist.

Meanwhile, Hemsworth's epic seafaring tale In the Heart of the Sea is being pushed back nine months from a March to a December release.

Some industry websites are speculating it is either because director Ron Howard wants more time to finish the film, or because Warner Bros considers it may have an Oscar contender.
