Nelson's admirable WAMI awards

Timothy Nelson and the Infidels stormed the 2014 WA Music Awards last night, taking home five awards including best pop act and best album for their second full-length release, Terror Terror, Hide It Hide It.

Ginger afro'd frontman Nelson was named best male vocalist and best keys/synth artist, while the band's Luke Dux was named best guitarist.

Dux also plays in best blues and roots act winners the Floors alongside his brother Ryan Dux, who took out the best bassist title.

Other victors at the local music industry event held in city venue Capitol included electronic songstress Laura Jane Lowther, aka Kucka, who earned three awards including best single for Unconditional.

Abbe May beat Lowther, Felicity Groom and Mei Saraswati for the best female vocalist crown.

Currently on tour in the US, psychedelic rockers Pond were named most popular act and most popular live act ahead of a strong field, including the Love Junkies, who landed WAM gongs for best rock act and best drummer for Lewis Walsh.

Jodie Regan, who runs Fremantle record label Spinning Top and its impressive stable starring Tame Impala, Pond and Groom, took out both the management award and Golden WAMi for contribution to the local industry.

The public voted St. Jerome's Laneway Festival the music event of the year for the second consecutive year and North Fremantle institution Mojos most popular venue. Garage rockers Hideous Sun Demon were voted most popular new act.

Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Grinderman and the Painkillers' bassist Martyn P. Casey, and Phil Stevens, manager of John Butler Trio, San Cisco and the Waifs, were inducted into the WAM Hall of Fame last night.

The WA Music Awards are a highlight of the 2014 WAM Festival, which runs until today.
