Fox is fine with wearing short-shorts

Megan Fox is fine with wearing short-shorts and being the damsel in distress.

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles star is refreshingly candid when talking about female roles, including her latest as April O'Neil in the action flick.

Although O'Neil is more of a fearless journalist than love interest, Fox says she doesn't get "hung up" if it's the other way around.

"I don't feel devalued if I shoot a film where I'm wearing short-shorts or if I do get rescued by my boyfriend," she tells AAP in Sydney.

"I'm OK with that. It's not offensive to me, but at the same time I think it's nice to have female characters that are a little more assertive and independent.

"But I don't have a strong feminist stance on it one way or another."

Fox's break-out role was in Michael Bay's Transformers back in 2007, with the director taking on a producing role on Turtles.

Like Transformers, Turtles is also based on 80s nostalgia. The pizza-loving heroes were first seen in comic books, before finding life in various television series and movies.

In this reboot the turtles must try to put a stop to the villainous Shredder, who wants to take control of New York City.

Fox says O'Neil is a little different than we've seen her before, but she's still very passionate and opinionated.

"She has a courageous streak in her," she says.

"When people tell her no, or people tell her that she's crazy, she's like, 'you know what? I believe what I believe and I'm going to pursue it anyway'."
