Artwork helps take MS beyond the visual

That no two people living with multiple sclerosis have the same journey is the idea behind The Brand Agency’s latest campaign for the MS Society of WA.

Called Pictures of MS, the entirely print campaign uses artwork to visually represent the real life stories of three people with MS.

MS Society general manager of marketing Dave Bugden said many people did not understand what it was like to live with the incurable condition.

“We asked The Brand Agency to tell the stories of people living with low, medium and high-impact MS and show the diversity of the condition,” he said.

“We need people to understand not only the depth of the problem but also to give hope and show that there are ways we can all help.”

Three international artists created the artwork to tell each story, including Spanish artist Cristina Guitian and Australian Asphyxia Victoria.

The Brand Agency art director David Donald said the idea was to share diverse personal stories and allow the artists to “capture the different experiences that people with MS have and how the society has helped each of them in different ways”.

The underlying theme of the campaign is that “every person with MS has their own story and with your help, we can tell a better one”. It is designed to encourage people to visit the society’s website and donate funds to vital research and support services.

It is a different approach to last year’s controversial television campaign, Trapped, which showed a woman with MS trapped inside a glass box. The ad was pulled after viewers, including people with MS, complained that it was “distressing, disgusting and disgraceful”.
