Teacher who fell pregnant after 'daily sex' with student faces 30-years jail
A US schoolteacher has pleaded guilty after she was impregnated by a 13-year-old student.
Alexandria Vera, 24, had sex with the teen almost daily for nine months, according to Aldine Independent School District Police.
Vera fell pregnant but later had an abortion after Child Protective Services questioned her about her relationship with the father, Vera told investigators.
“As parents, we entrust teachers with a very important role to educate students and we should not be concerned about teachers getting in a sexual relationship with our children while they are at school,” Assistant District Attorney Tiffany Dupree with the Child Abuse Division told KHOU.
Vera was initially charged with continuous sex abuse of a child, which could have landed her a life sentence, but is pleading guilty to a lesser charge of aggravated sexual assault as part of a deal which could reduce her prison time to 30 years, according to CBS News.
The child is now 14 years old, according to CBS.
Vera, a former middle school teacher in Texas was teaching eighth-grade English at Houston's Stovall Middle School at the time of the alleged crime.
She met the alleged victim in summer school in 2015.
Vera admitted to the police that she and the victim had sex "on almost a daily basis."
She became pregnant in January and told the teen's family members, who were reportedly: "supportive and excited”.
Vera had an abortion in February after Child Protective Services questioned her about the allegations.
An arrest warrant was issued in May and Vera surrendered to police.
The victim is currently in foster care.
Vera told investigators that she and the boy “love each other,” according to CBS news.
She is expected to face sentencing in January 2017.
