More than 70 per cent of respondents to a national survey want Australian governments to spend more on cycling, walking and public transport infrastructure.

Just one in four respondents who had cycled during the past year had felt safe riding on roads without bike lanes.

The survey found two thirds of parents said they would be more likely to let their children ride to school if there were safer paths and intersections.

Just one in 12 children rode to school, according to the Investment in Active Transport survey to be published by the National Heart Foundation and Cycling Promotion Fund today.

CPF spokesman Stephen Hodge said half of all car trips in major cities were less than 5km and more funding was needed to make cycling and walking a safe and desirable option.
