High-flyers cleared for take-off

If you step on board an aircraft in five years, the voice from the cockpit could belong to one of these Melville Senior High Schools students.

And the skills which will take their flight into the air will likely have been learnt at the helm of one of these pieces of technology at the school.

Through its aviation studies course, the school has trained dozens of student pilots, engineers and instructors and helped fast-track many to their first solo flight in a light aircraft.

Course co-ordinator Randall Brink said the school was one of only a handful in WA running the specialist course and was the first in the State to include a moving
flight simulator.

“Normally it takes about 15 to 20 hours to go solo in a light aircraft but we’ve just had one kid do it in 10 hours, attributable to the simulator,” he said.
