Vandals hit cop vehicle

Brazen youths targeted a police car with spray paint while officers were out searching for them, in one of a string of graffiti offences committed earlier this month.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday morning on May 2.

Broome Police Senior Sergeant Brendon Barwick said police were called to an area in Old Broome after youths were spotted acting suspiciously.

While officers were out looking for them, the juveniles allegedly spray painted the car.

Sen. Sgt Barwick said the vehicle had to be taken off the road because of the obscenities written all over it and was out of service for a few days.

Police believe up to three youths were involved.

Sen. Sgt Barwick said the incident was one of a series of offences committed that night throughout town, ranging from the Broome Boulevard Shopping Centre to Anne Street.

"There were a number of private vehicles that were damaged as well so a significant cost to members of the public and a significant cost to the police," he said.

One youth appeared in court last week and was fined $500 for damage to the police car.
