Motorcycle history repeats in Freo

The unmistakable roar of vintage motorcycle engines will transport many back to simpler times in Fremantle this weekend.

Hundreds of old-fashioned motorcycle enthusiasts will venture to the town square where Arthur Grady rolled in after a history making trip around Australia more than nine decades ago.

“Arthur Grady was the first person to ride a motorised vehicle around Australia in 1924, before there were roads,” City of Fremantle Festivals co-ordinator Alex Marshall said.

Arthur Grady Day, the showcase event of the Fremantle Heritage Festival, pays tribute to the Fremantle icon who started as a bicycle repairer and went onto shape WA’s automotive history.

A replica of Mr Grady’s motorcycle will sit proudly alongside hundreds of motorcycles on the day, many more than a century old.

Thousands of people are expected flood Fremantle for the Heritage Festival, from May 8 to 17.

Mr Marshall said the popular event was about celebrating what made Fremantle the vibrant hub it is today.

“I think everyone has a connection to Freo in some way and this is celebrating that,” he said.

“Fremantle is undergoing a huge revitalisation, and it’s a really great time to remember where we came from.”
