There was a time when most young men could service their own car, when changing the oil and checking the brakes was run-of-the-mill.

That basic know-how is largely a thing of the past, but Leeming Senior High School is bringing it back.

The Leeming Automotive Trade Training Centre is probably the best facility of its kind in WA. Students from Leeming and nearby schools use the centre to complete Certificate II studies in automotive preparation. Leeming is one of the public schools that could earn prizes in the Department of Education's Our School's a Star program.

Year 12 automotive preparation teacher Steve Morgan said there was a 50-50 split between students furthering career prospects and gaining life skills.

"Employers will find our kids more useful because they can already do the basic services," he said.
