Bid for top events on Rotto

Rottnest businesses want more top-notch events on the island, with a Leeuwin-style concert on the upgraded golf course at the top of their wish list.

They say an impressive calendar of events is crucial to getting tourists to the island.

And Rottnest Island Chamber of Commerce chairman Michael Sier believes island businesses could help "knock down some of the barriers" that might stop events from taking place.

Speaking to a gathering of island operators and others, Mr Sier said a big concert on the island would be fabulous and the new golf course would be "the perfect venue".

"There is no reason why we couldn't get 3000 to 5000 people to a concert on the island," he said. "And the golf course is a fantastic asset - an untapped facility that can only grow.

"We could call the event Leeuwin With a Boat Trip."

The Rottnest Island Authority has recently recognised the importance of events for the island and established a committee to look at improving the events calendar.

They are understood to be examining several initiatives, including a skydiving event, the expansion of the Channel Swim to two days, another ocean swim event and an offshore fireworks display on New Year's Eve.

The committee is chaired by RIA chief executive Paolo Amaranti and includes representatives from the chamber, the island's volunteer guides and Boating WA.

Mr Amaranti said the committee was designed to support, engage, canvass and represent all stakeholders in growing visitation to the island.

"It provides guidance and advice on event feasibility," he said.

An authority spokeswoman said a concert on the golf course would be a matter for the lessee and the chamber.

It is understood a brief discussion has been held with the WA Symphony Orchestra, but the cost of getting the orchestra to the island appears prohibitive without substantial private sponsorship.

The RIA is also putting a greater focus on hosting weddings, in co-ordination with island businesses.

February data shows Rottnest visitor numbers were up 7.3 per cent on last year.
