Muslim fashion sets patterns for faithful

With works from some of Australia's emerging Muslim designers and entrepreneurs, an exhibition showcasing clothing worn by Muslim women is exploring the concept of combining faith with fashion.

Titled "Faith, fashion, fusion: Muslim women's style in Australia", it is on display at the Katanning library.

The collection was created by a new generation of Sydney designers who have explored the diversity and the desire of dressing in a creative and fashionable way, while maintaining the requirements of their faith.

Exhibition co-ordinator Kate Ford said it catered to a very wide audience because many role models were involved in the installations.

"It will especially appeal for younger women thinking about identity and how to place themselves in the world," she said.

"It shows that they can be unique and creative as individuals, you can see in the case studies that all the women are very strong and quite independent and the way that they all approach their dress is very unique but stylish."

Through photographs and interviews that accompany the fashion, the project also explores Muslim women and their experiences about misconceptions and prejudice that exist in society.

The art pieces follow on from successful viewings at the Powerhouse in Sydney, Wagga Wagga in NSW and Geraldton.

Ms Ford said it had received a positive response.

"Women had demonstrations on the different ways they wear their head pieces, there are different case studies from individuals, even a kid's activity corner where you can create your own version of women in their dress with magnetic panels," she said.

"There is a lot of energy to it, it is an accessible and friendly exhibition and it truly pushes the boundaries."

The exhibition will be showcased in Katanning until June 14.
